Bridge Bearings Manufacturers

Bearings used in constructing bridges are divided into two major categories – expansion bearing and fixed bearing. While the expansion bearings can permit translational and rotational movements, the latter only allows rotational and some translational movements. DECG International is one of India’s best bridge bearing manufacturers that offer all the various types of bridge bearings and also guarantee high quality.

Types of Bridge Bearing

The different types of bridge bearings and their uses in various constructional areas are as follows:

Pot Bearings:

A bearing consisting of a metal piston supported by a disc of unreinforced elastomer that is confined within a metal cylinder for allowing rotational movement about any axis in horizontal plane and to bear and transmit vertical load. Pot bearings may be provided with sliding assembly (with or without restraint in the form of guide along a desired direction to bear and

transmit horizontal force) comprising of stainless steel plate attached to metal backing plate sliding in horizontal plane over sliding material confined in recess(s) on the piston which shall be termed as Sliding / Guided Pot bearings. Depending on the desired degree of freedom Pot bearings may be of three types as follows:

  1. Fixed Pot Bearing

  2. Sliding Pot Bearing

  3. Guided Pot Bearing

Rocker and Pin Bearings

Rocker is an expansion bridge bearing that is composed of a curved surface at the bottom that can accommodate the translational movement and a pin on the top that facilitates the rotational movement of the bridge structures.

Rocker and Pin bridge bearings are used in steel bridge structures and are considered when the bridge movement is known and described adequately. These bridge bearings can undergo severe corrosion and deterioration, making regular inspections and maintenance an essential part of the construction.

Roller Bearings

Roller bearings are used to construct concrete or steel bridge structures. The roller bearing can be used in two different forms, namely – single roller and multiple roller bearings. Multiple roller bearings have several rollers installed under the two plates and can facilitate both rotational and translational motion for the bridge. One of the best things about roller bearings is that they are cheap to manufacture, but they have a limited weight capacity, making them suitable for specific constructions. On the other hand, multiple roller bearings are expensive and can short large vertical loads. These rollers need regular inspections and rehabilitation since they are susceptible to corrosion and damages.

Elastomeric bearings

Elastomeric bearings are elastomers manufactured from synthetic and natural rubber. These bridge bearings support both translational and rotational movements through elastomer deformation. Elastomeric bearings can carry large loads and prevent lateral bulging of the elastomers.

The number of elastomer pads needed for the construction depends on the type of reinforcement used for the bridge. For instance, steel reinforces elastomeric bearings are the strongest, and plain elastomeric pads are the weakest. One of the best things about Elastomeric bridge bearings is that they are neither expensive nor require any maintenance after installation.

Spherical Bearings:

The Spherical bearings consists of a pair of matching concave and convex steel spherical backing plates with a low friction sliding interface in between them permitting the rotation by in-curve sliding. For the purpose of providing the translation

Ability, bearings are combined with the flat sliding elements. Depending on the desired degree of freedom Spherical bearings may be of three types as follows:

  1. Fixed Spherical Bearing

  2. Sliding Spherical Bearing

  3. Guided Spherical Bearing

Bridge Expansion Joints

The bridge expansion joint system is a traffic suitable bridge and road expansion joint which provides a primary watertight sealing and allow the movement caused due to temperature, traffic, settlements, etc. These bridge joints are designed to handle harsh environmental conditions and provide extensive mobility, low-temperature flexibility, and higher temperature stabilities compared to other solutions. Moreover, the non-evasive anchoring of bridge joints ensures quick turnarounds and repairs whenever needed. The bridge expansion joints prevent or decrease the maintenance cost of bridge bearing pads and other support structures.DECG is one of the best bridge expansion joint manufacturers in India and provides high-quality solutions for all joint expansion issues. These expansion joints are ideal for new construction and can also be retrofitted into old or failed bridge expansion joints of existing metal angles. These joints are long-lasting and made of the highest quality metals to reduce corrosion and deterioration of the joints with time. The system compromises a strip seal that is locked to the joint faces ensures that it is watertight and results in low-temperature flexibility.Types of Expansion JointsJoints prevent the passage of water and debris and are designed specifically for the size and movement properties of the joint. Followings are the types of joints depending on the movement at the site:

Each of these joints has a specific application method and set of compulsory parameters to ensure proper effectiveness. Proper sizing of the joint with an accurate assessment of the structure’s movements is essential to consider when selecting the appropriate type of joint for your bridge construction. Some other things to consider are substrate preparation, climate, manufacturer requirements, physical properties, and construction limitations of the joint material.

ASPHALTIC PLUG JOINT

Asphaltic plug joint for movements up to 40 mm is a simple bridge expansion joint filled with asphalt. TST (crushed stone) elastic material is a special type of elastic-plastic material with high viscosity. Being heated sufficiently to melt, it can be poured into gravel and will be shaped into asphalt concrete form after molding to bear vehicle load. The most advantage of  Asphaltic plug joint is that the bridge can be opened to traffic after two hours of construction.

COMPRESSION SEAL EXPANSION JOINT

The Compression Seal Expansion Joint System is an extruded, neoprene rubber material. When compressed into a gap, this system provides an excellent sealing against the expansion and contraction. The Compression Seal Expansion Joint System is used for small movement up to 40mm expansion joints, in deck of parking, pre casted structures and other types of concrete structures.

STRIP SEAL EXPANSION JOIN T

The Strip Seal Expansion Joint System consists of a rubber gland, mechanically tightened between two steel edge members and provides a superior watertight proofing system. The design of the DECG Strip Seal System can easily accommodatethe high loads of vehicular traffic while effectively sealing joints in bridges and structures with very high movements up to 120mm it is to be noted that IRC recommend strip sealjoint for movement up to 80mm. DECG Strip Seal Systems can be manufactured to accommodate a variety of field configurations along with multidirectional movements. The DECG Strip Seal has been engineered so that the elastomeric Seal can be inserted either prior to or after the securing of the steel shapes to the superstructure. Machined Steel shapes maximize Seal install ability and minimizes manufacturing tolerance.

STRIP SEAL EXPANSION JOINT WITH SINUS PLATEThe use of “sinus plates” reduces the noise from over-rolling traffic by up to 80 % by covering the straight transverse gap in the carriageway. The wheels of over-rolling vehicles thus maintain constant contact with the expansion joint’s surface, eliminating the noise caused by impacts with the gap edge. The special shape of the sinus plates also enables motorcycles and bicycles to cross the joint safely. DECG expansion joints featuring sinus plates are ideal for use on bridges near residential areas or in other noise-sensitive zones.

MODULAR EXPANSION JOINT

Modular expansion joints are used when the movements of a bridge exceed the capacity of a single gap joint or a finger type joint. The individual gaps are sealed by watertight elastomeric profiles, and surface beam movements are regulated by an elastic control system. Modular multiple-gap expansion joints can accommodate movements in every direction and rotations about every axis. They can be used for longitudinal movements of as little as 160 mm, or for very large movements of well over 3000 mm.

FINGER TYPE EXPANSION JOINT

Finger Type expansion joints used in bridge construction are an ideal component to accommodate bridge expansion and contraction while reducing the amount of noise pollution that occurs in other alternative joint types.  The primary components of the Finger Type expansion joint consist of steel plates (sliding) that are connected to each side of the road surface’s gap. Finger Joints are designed with in a (fingers of a hand) type of pattern, where the steel plates accommodate movement within one another & allow movement along the axis of the fingers themselves. Since there are no moving parts attached to the joint, cantilever moments reduce the stress induced to the structure. There is a large replaceable gutter below the joint which is made of reinforced neoprene and provides an efficient drainage system into the bridge’s ducts. The gutter also limits the build up of standing water to reduce the possibility of vehicles aquaplaning.

SLAB SEAL EXPANSION JOINT

SLAB SEAL joint will consist of steel insert and elastomeric slab unit. This type of seal is recommended for simply supported or continuous spans, right or skew (less than 20 degree), moderately curved with maximum movement upto 50mm.

Important Things to ConsiderWhen using concrete as a construction material, it is often important to consider some things for the bridges. Although concrete’s strength and weight load are important, another factor that influences the material and its longevity is the environment. Thermal cycles within an area must be taken under serious consideration before considering concrete as your building material. As seasons and weather change, the structure is likely to expand or contract with the change in temperatures. Sometimes, if overlooked, these expansions or contractions can lead to severe problems with a faulty expansion joint system. The heating and cooling of a concrete bridge deck will cause expansion and contraction, respectively, continuously testing the tensile strength of the construction materials. One of the most common phenomena for this is cracking of the surface. When the expansion is restricted, the materials can be crushed or distorted, causing the concrete to undertake damage to its structural integrity. To prevent these failures, you need to install expansion joints that can allow the concrete to expand and contract freely without compromising the structure of the bridge.
